Speech delivered by the Honourable Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Taraba State, at the Opening Ceremony of Corp Members at the NYSC Camp, Taraba State Today, August 18, 2023

1. It is my pleasure to address you, on this occasion marking the formal opening and swearing-in of the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Corps members deployed to Taraba State.

2. First, let me acknowledge the presence of His Lordship, the Chief Judge of Taraba State, Justice Filibus Agya and other distinguished invited guests. I also welcome our esteemed young graduates who have been called up for the National Youth Service from various parts of the country.

3. My dear compatriots, I heartily congratulate you on the successful completion of your various academic programme which qualified you for enlistment into the National Youth Service Corps Scheme. As you mark the attainment of this epoch today, be reminded that the task ahead is enormous.
4. Since inception, over fifty (50) years ago, the National Youth Service Corps has grown from strength to strength. Undoubtedly, the scheme has played a pivotal role in the promotion of National Unity and Integration. It has also ensured the inculcation of discipline and patriotism in members of the corps. Furthermore, while corps members have contributed immensely to accelerated growth and development of the national economy, the scheme has ensured the equitable distribution of skilled manpower to all nooks and crannies of the nation.

5. The Orientation Course therefore, is packaged to equip you with the physical and mental alertness needed for quality and patriotic service to the fatherland. I urge you to participate fully in all camp activities to enhance your readiness for the rest of the service year.

6. My administration places high Premium on Youth Development. We therefore consider Youth Corps members and the NYSC Scheme as one of the critical development partners, endowed with energy, training, talent and skills needed to galvanize the state and indeed the nation to the society of our dreams.

7. Your predecessors contributed immensely to the improvement of the quality of life of our people, especially, in the rural areas. I expect nothing less from you. It is imperative to remind you that the nation sees in you solution to its myriad challenges, I therefore enjoin you to live up to this expectation.

8. I am well briefed that Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development is part of your Camp training Curricular. While applauding the NYSC management for this innovation, I enjoin you to seize the opportunity to acquire economic skills which will compliment your academic qualification and ultimately make you self-reliant and more marketable at the end of your service year.

9. I am pleased with the report of your good conduct since you arrived the Orientation Camp. I urge you to sustain this exemplary conduct all through this Orientation Exercise and the Service Year proper.

10. On our part, I wish to use this medium to reassure you that my administration will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the security and welfare of corps members in the state will remain our utmost priority during and after the Orientation Course. We will also strengthen our synergy with the NYSC management and other stakeholders towards providing support for the realization of the laudable programme and activities of the Scheme in the State.

11. Let me at this juncture inform you that, the people of Taraba State are welcoming, peace loving and accommodating. You will in no time, discover that Taraba State is “home away from home.”

12. While I wish you a very successful and memorable Orientation Exercise, it is now my singular honour to declare the 2023 Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course open.
